Fanie Buys is a multi-media artist, working primarily in oils. Referencing a mix of pop culture and personal experience, Buys' work is an amalgam of overly direct sentiment and hidden meaning. Portraiture is a recurring theme, and the act of observation becomes the ideal proxy to convey his complex relationship with those he chooses to represent; especially considering he is so often drawn to the impersonal veneer of glossy tabloids and coffee table books.
Born in Gansbaai on the West Coast (South Africa), he grew up in the Garden Route and currently resides and works in Cape Town. Buys obtained a BA in Fine Arts at the Michaelis School of Fine Art in 2016, with a distinction in Studiowork. Despite majoring in print media, he now works primarily in oils. In 2018, Buys was a finalist in the Tollman Bouchard Finlayson Art Award and a Sanlam Portrait Award Top 100 recipient in 2015. Buys’ most recent of two solo exhibitions was Happy Birthday Jesus! at 99 Loop Gallery in Cape Town (2019). He has participated in a number of group exhibitions in Cape Town with the latest being Proxies at Gallery Gallery in Johannesburg (2020).
